42 APS students participated in the Arlington Winter Solstice Chess Tournament on Saturday, February 3, 2024. The tournament was sponsored by Arlington Students Chess and open to Arlington County students in grades K-12. It was designed to give students a taste of scholastic tournament competition and adhered to the rules and conditions of the United States Chess Federation (USCF).

  • The tournament participants were divided into three groups: K-5, K-8 and K-12.
  • Arlington Career Center had a total of four students registered for the high school section of the tournament. Our students played against Yorktown, Wakefield and HB Woodlawn students.
  • ACC took home the top 3 trophies:
    • 1st: Khoi Vu
    • 2nd: Abubakir Ibrohimov
    • 3rd: Johan Franco

Congratulations to our students for taking home all three top placements and to all the students throughout APS who participated in the event! A special thank you to the ACC Chess Club sponsor, Mr. Wilmer Castro for helping to make this event a huge success.
