On March 22, after months of experimenting and improving the system, the aquaponics project produced its first harvest. An explanation of the aquaponics system was given before Chef Randolph’s 5th period culinary students harvested the lettuce. After the harvest, they used the lettuce to make a salad for the Career Center staff on Friday. After the old lettuce was removed, Cindy Schall’s HILT A Science class planted new seeds in the aquaponics system, a great application to end their plant unit. Many thanks to Manny Sanchez’s electricity classes for installing grow lights, which did an amazing job of speeding up the growth of the lettuce. We hope to contribute lettuces in the future for use in ongoing programs, like our Culinary Arts Off the Pike restaurant and the Brown Box Lunch Program.
