Over the weekend, Memorializing the Enslaved in Arlington (MEA) dedicated the first three “stumbling stones” embedded in Arlington sidewalks. The plaques honored three enslaved individuals who lived in the Yorktown Civic Association area.
This work would not have been possible without some of our amazing CTE instructors, Jordan Kivitz, Kyle Godfrey, and Matt Cupples (Kenmore MS). Mr. Kivitz’s students designed and fabricated the bronze stones. Mr. Cupple’s students created wooden replicas of the stones for a traveling exhibit on the stones and MEA. Mr. Godfrey’s Carpentry II class built a lovely wooden exhibit stand to hold the plaques, a map of Arlington enslavement sites, and explanatory text.
All three teachers were present at the dedication and spoke highly of their students and their contributions.
Thank you to these teachers for going the extra mile for our students and the greater Arlington community, and thank you to the MEA for your partnership and support!
