From Dr. Patrick Murphy, Superintendent of Arlington Public Schools:
We were fortunate to have VA Sec. of Education Atif Qarni visit the Career Center on the morning of Friday, May 4th for a roundtable discussion and tour. He was accompanied by his Special Assistant, Chidimma Uche, a former Jamestown teacher. I was joined by Dr. Barbara Kanninen, Nancy Van Doren, Dr. Tara Nattrass and Julia Burgos for the visit. Margaret Chung and the Arlington Career Center administrative team also participated along with the coordinators and students of each of the programs to include Academic Academy Coordinator Madeline LaSalle and 12 grader, Rene Santos; HILT Institute Coordinator Amanda Treviño and 11th grader, Heylin Rodriguez, PEP Coordinator, Micah Stein-Verbit and PEP student, Justin Boatner, and Arlington Tech Coordinator, Catherine Steinmetz and 9th grader, Adrian Buchholz. The students were eloquent and shared how the Career Center has changed their lives in a positive direction offering them opportunities that they did not see as possible. They stressed how it has prepared them well for their futures and the chance to earn college credits and work-related skills while in high school. The stories and successes that they shared were moving and illustrated how the programs are providing alternative pathways for learning and growing while meeting the needs of the whole child.
