Understanding Transition Services and What Needs to Happen

Description: Arlington Public Schools Transition Services, Parent Resource Center and Program for Employment Preparedness (PEP) have sponsored a Transition Series over the course of the 2020-21 school year. This first workshop was an overview of available transition services and is entitled “Understanding Transition Services and What Needs to Happen”. Speakers included representatives from:

  • The ARC of Northern Virginia
  • Arlington’s Community Services Board (CSB)
  • Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS)
  • Program for Employment Preparedness (PEP)

Understanding Transition Services: Employment Connections

Description: Arlington Public Schools Transition Services, Parent Resource Center and Program for Employment Preparedness (PEP) have sponsored a Transition Series over the course of the 2020-21 school year. This second workshop focused on opportunities for families to learn about employment supports from a host of community and agency partners. Presenters included ServiceSource, Melwood, Didlake and many others.

Description: Arlington Public Schools Transition Services, Parent Resource Center and Program for Employment Preparedness (PEP) have sponsored a Transition Series over the course of the 2020-21 school year. This third workshop focused on Day Program Supports. Day Programs offer persons with disabilities the opportunity to spend their day in meaningful activities, focused on social and community engagement. Various community vendors shared information about their programs and the supported activities they offer.

Understanding Transition Services: Supported Decision Making (SDM)

Description: Arlington Public Schools Transition Services, Parent Resource Center and Program for Employment Preparedness (PEP) have offered a Transition Series over the course of the 2020-21 school year. This fourth workshop focused on Supported Decision Making (SDM), featuring Lucy Beadnell, Director of Advocacy for the Arc of Northern Virginia. SDM is a way to provide short- and long-term support for people with developmental disabilities who need assistance to understand and make choices.  SDM can be used as an alternative to guardianship that is less costly and restrictive, or with guardianship to maximize self-determination.  It is a growing national best practice for increasing independence, safety, and quality of life.

Understanding Transition Services: What are Medicaid Waivers?

Description: Arlington Public Schools Transition Services, Parent Resource Center and Program for Employment Preparedness (PEP) have sponsored a Transition Series throughout the course of the 2020-21 school year. This fifth session included a discussion on Medicaid Waivers, featuring Lucy Beadnell, Director of Advocacy for the Arc of Northern Virginia. Medicaid Waivers provide a wide variety of supports to people with developmental disabilities to live and access resources in their community. Within this presentation, Ms. Beadnell reviewed the basics of Medicaid Waivers, including:

  • Application
  • Waiting lists
