Animal Science

The Animal Science Department at Arlington Career Center empowers students to explore the science and practice of animal care through hands-on learning, professional skill-building, and community partnerships. Our mission is to cultivate compassionate, career-ready students by combining rigorous coursework, live animal handling, and real-world experiences with shelters, clinics, and local businesses. We foster curiosity, leadership, and a deep respect for animal welfare, preparing students to thrive in postsecondary education and careers in veterinary science and related fields.

Two Classes:

1. Veterinary Science (I/II)

Veterinary Science I & II prepares students for college and careers in veterinary medicine and animal care. Through hands-on labs and real-world experiences, students learn how to care for animals and develop essential skills used by veterinary professionals.

Key topics include:

  • Animal anatomy, physiology, nutrition, and medical terminology
  • Safety, sanitation, and clinical exam procedures
  • Disease prevention and parasitology
  • Professional skills like communication, office procedures, and workplace etiquette
  • Technical experience in surgery prep, medication administration, and end-of-life care

2. Small Animal Care (I/II)

Small Animal Care I & II introduces students to the fundamentals of caring for and managing small animals. Through hands-on activities and real-world experiences, students explore animal behavior, health, nutrition, and reproduction.Key topics include:

  • Safe handling and care of small animals
  • Understanding animal behavior and wellness
  • Nutrition, reproduction, and basic health practices
  • Tools, equipment, and facilities used in the animal care industry
